MRI (MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING)

MRI (MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radio frequency waves and a strong magnetic field to provide remarkably clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. The technique has proven valuable for the diagnosis of a broad range of pathologic conditions, including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, joint and musculoskeletal disorders.

How is 1.5 Tesla MRI better than 0.35 Tesla MRI?
• higher image quality
• faster scanning time
• can do procedures that can’t be done with 0.35 (abdomen, MRCP, Pelvis (Including Fistulography), prostate with perfusion , brain with perfusion, MRA, MRV, , etc

Things you should know before your MRI scan

  • There is no risk of exposure to radiation during MRI imaging.
  • For Abdominal and Pelvic MRI and MRCP you should have NOTHING to eat for 4 hours prior to your examination. You may have water.
  • Remove any metal items before the test. Let us know in advance if you have any implanted devices, pacemakers, metal clips or stents in your body.
  • MRI contrast may be required when a very detailed image is necessary to evaluate the problem area of the body.
  • If you are claustrophobic, please ask your physician to prescribe anti-anxiety medications to take prior to the MRI study on the day of your examination. For your own safety if you have taken an anti-anxiety medication, then you will be required to have a designated driver to drive you home once the study is complete.
  •  Please schedule your Breast MRI within 7-10 days of your menstrual cycle. If the MRI breast order is urgent, then this preparation will not be enforced.

What to Expect During Your MRI

Before the MRI, you will be asked to remove glasses, pens and pencils, hearing aids, hair accessories, dentures, infusion insulin pumps, jewelry, coins, ATM cards, wallets and purses, keys, pocketknives, phones and then you will change into a gown. During your MRI you will lie motionless on a comfortable padded table. The table will slide into the MRI machine. During most MRI exams you will hear loud thumping noises or knocking sounds while the magnet is working. If the noise from the machine is uncomfortable for you, we provide headphones. You may also be able to listen to music of your own choosing through the headphones to make the MRI exam more enjoyable.Even with headphones, you will be able to speak with the technologist by intercom if you have a question or concern about the test. You must lie as still as possible, so we can obtain the best picture. You will be reminded to tell the MRI technologist if you feel noticeable discomfort from the contrast dye.
It is normal to feel a cool sensation at the injection site which will subside when the injection is finished. We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing without metal snaps, hooks, belts or zippers. You may need to wear an exam gown during the study because metal objects on your clothing affect the quality of the images.
