CT SCAN (Computed Tomography)

CT SCAN (Computed Tomography)

CT imaging is particularly useful because it can show several types of tissue lung, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels with great clarity. Radiologists can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders using this imaging modality.

Things you should know before having your CT scan done

  • Ct scan is a fast, simple and painless procedure
  • No special preparation is necessary for a CT scan done without contrast.
  • If your CT scan needs a contrast medication, bring a creatinine blood test result that is done within the past 3 days.
  • For CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis, patients should have NOTHING to eat for 4 hours prior to the CT examination. Patients may only have clear liquids (water, apple juice).
  • If you have a known allergy, please inform your physician prior to the exam.
  • If you are diabetic taking any medication that contains Metformin and are scheduled for an examination that requires IV contrast DO NOT take your medications on the day of your appointment and for 48 hours following completion of your imaging examination.
  • Take all non-diabetic medications as directed.
  • Patients should take their medications at the normal time with clear liquids only.

What to Expect During Your CT

You will lie on a scan table that slides slowly into a large CT scanner. The CT staff will take preliminary scans to help define the area to be imaged. During this time, you will be asked to hold your breath and lie still. Once the area is defined, you may receive an injection of contrast media through the IV to “highlight” the vascular structures. As the contrast is injected, you may feel a warm flushing sensation or a metallic taste in your mouth. This is normal and will pass quickly. It is important that you remain very still during the procedure. You may be asked to wait a short time while the images are reviewed to determine if additional images are needed.
