Echocardiography is a special test that uses an ultrasound machine to look at the structure and function of the heart. It is used to assess if there is any change in chamber size, dilation, or thickening, blood clots in the heart chambers and problems with the function of the heart valves.
When you arrive, you will undress from the waist up and will be given a gown to wear. Then you will lie on your back or side on a table or stretcher. The cardiologist/ radiologist will apply gel to your chest area and move a small hand-held device called a transducer to collect images. You may be asked to change position or hold your breath for a short time at specific intervals.
